Space Voyage School Seminar (SVSS)

What Activities Are Provided?

A centerpiece of the program is the space shuttle flight simulator where students learn the processes and procedures of space shuttle flight. The complexity of the interactions within shuttle flight simulation is based on grade level and the conceptual ability of the students. At the shuttle simulator, students learn that teamwork, problem solving and communication as well as following directions are important in being successful.  In addition to the shuttle flight simulator, a variety of engaging, hands-on activities as are provided.

In Space Voyage, students work in small groups, or teams on a variety of activities. Each activity focuses on one or more of the following: teamwork, problem solving, and communication skills. Presently, there are several hundred activities, called lab packs, from which 16 to 24 are selected. Often there are multiple set-ups of the high interest activities. Throughout the program students are given the freedom to select the activities they want to complete and the power to achieve and accomplish. Through purposeful immersion, and a heightened state of learning, students emerge and achieve, buoyed with a real sense of accomplishment and confidence. And, by working in teams, students develop a sense of belonging. Overall, teachers, chaperones and students have a very enjoyable experience.

The goal of the program is to inspire, motivate and empower by bringing school subjects to life and have the students realize their relevance and importance. Space Voyage can be described as "high-tech, higher-touch" with emphasis on using to help with problem solving, teamwork and communication skills. For many students, the program day is a "peak experience" remembered long after the program day.
