Space Voyage Academy can be an initial experience for beginning students or a continuation of space flight studies for those who have already completed one or more levels in Space Voyage Academy. More than 300,000 students from all over the United States have experienced the challenge and thrill of thinking like an astronaut in a Space Voyage program. This summer, Space Voyage Academy will offer eight weeks of programming at Summit Ridge Middle School in Jefferson County, Colorado.
Space Voyage Academy is designed for students with an interest in the area of space exploration. Space Voyage Academy immerses students in thinking and working "as-if" they were astronauts. The academy is organized into multiple levels of achievement with each level having its own set of skills and objectives. Each level builds on the level before. Space Flight Medals of Honor and Academy certificates are awarded upon the completion of each level.
To be successful students should: 1) Be interested in America's space program, 2) Be capable of independent work, 3) Be able to work with a team when asked, 4) Be self motivated, be a self starter, and, 5) Have the maturity of a child his or her age. Space Voyage Academy is a regional day camp. Space Voyage offers a sophisticated model of instruction where students are immersed with their "crews" in manned space studies. All possible reality-based processes and procedures of America's space program are integrated into the program. Space Voyage Academy is organized into week long programs. Approximately fifty percent of participants return from one summer to the next to continue their achievements.
The Academy is organized by level, with each level having specific requirements in knowledge, skill, confidence, teamwork and experience. Students begin their Space Voyage Academy experience at the Pathfinder Level (ages 6 to 8) or Cadet Level 1 (ages 9 and above), and work through as many levels as they have time and energy. Additional Alpha Programs (special interest programs having a singular focus) are offered to cadets who have finished Cadet Level 2. The program is designed to allow students to work through a level, typically in one week of academy attendance. Space Voyage Academy offers a special opportunity for students to continue their space achievements. Ongoing studies are encouraged.
Shuttle Flight and Space Station Simulations. Space Voyage Academy invites each student to become part of a shuttle crew to explore and master the complex operations involved in shuttle flight and the building of a functioning space station. Students experience the complex processes, procedures and functions involved in planning, completing and evaluating shuttle flight operations and in the building of a Space Station. The activities of the Space Voyage Academy curriculum are well defined, and include; manned flight studies, space station construction, living and working in microgravity, mission patch design and space art, space history, economics (budget analysis), robotics, electronic communications, and exploring new technologies. Other topics related to manned space flight are explored and studied. These include virtual reality, advanced robotics, solar science, pilot skills, building inflatables, and space models.
About The Program Directors.
Leadership for each week-long study is provided by Dr. Mark "Doc" Palmere, Ph.D. Dr. Palmere has an extensive background in inspiring, motivating and empowering high-potential students. Dr. Palmere has worked with the Space Voyage programs since 1987, immersing students in an astronaut experience and encouraging skill development in the areas of problem solving, communication, teamwork and aeronautics. Dr. Palmere holds a bachelor's degree in biological science, a master's degree in educational psychology and dual doctoral degrees in the areas of child-school psychology and school administration, curriculum and instruction. Visiting certified teachers and scientists may assist with program leadership.
Student Instructor Program.
Students who have previously attended Space Voyage and have finished Level 4 may apply to be Space Voyage instructors. Student Instructors serve as leaders, role models for other students, and program ambassadors. Qualified high school students may serve as camp counselors. For more information on working as an instructor or camp counselor contact us by E-mail or see our web site for additional information on "summer opportunities."
