Welcome to the staff area. Space Voyage Instructors and staff are a great group. To be a certified instructor is a lifetime achievement.
In addition to demonstrating "expert" knowledge in space station and shuttle operations (completion of L4), every Instructor is carefully screened and successfully complete the Student Instructor Apprentice (SIA) program under the guidance of senior Instructors and Dr. Palmere. The SIA program is self-paced and invites each Apprentice to demonstrate the knowledge, skill and confidence required to be an SV Instructor.
Every Apprentice learns the SVA Leadership Axioms and Honor Code, the roles and functions of each instructor level, and the core values and philosophy of the program. Entry into the apprentice program requires a family commitment to support the new Instructor to work for at least two weeks for two summers after completion of the apprenticeship.
How long does it take to complete? Historically, as little as one week, as much as 3-8 weeks. Simply put: Lean the basic knowledge and demonstrate competence in the roles and functions of a Journeyman Instructor (Instructor-Grade 1, or I1). For some, the apprentice program is an easy transition. For others, it can be brutal. Historically, SV Instructors are tremendous leaders and learners. They have great strength of character and are often a bit eccentric. And like the cadet and pathfinder programs, these eccentricities are welcomed and celebrated.
We encourage every SVA Cadet and Pathfinder to become a Space Voyage Instructor. We are a great program because of the quality of our Instructors and our ability to evolve while focusing on our core values.
If you are interested in learning about becoming and Instructor, read and review the "Leadership Guide, Application and More." This guide contains descriptions of each Instructor level and more.
The Instructor program evolved in parallel fashion to the SVA Cadet program. All documents are Acrobat PDF
